Singapore’s story began in the south - the island’s first gateway to the world. From Pulau Brani to Pasir Panjang, former residents who grew up along these coastlines recall a childhood shaped by the sea, thriving industries and a young nation on the cusp of greatness. Pulau Brani was once a tropical haven: home to a vibrant seaside kampong and a tin-smelting factory that exported refined tin across the globe. Across the water, the mainland was rising fast. The harbour expanded to rival the world’s best, breweries brewed for export and power stations ran day and night to light up the island.
